The background for the art in Galleri Østfløyen is the rich collection of art and objects found in the Manor House: the home of Morten Leuch d.y. and Peder Anker, along with their descendants.

Marble Variations

The starting point for Marble Variations is four marble sculptures that usually have their fixed place in the cultural-historical exhibition at the museum. With this exhibition, they depart from their safe existence and are displayed in new contexts. Along with other handpicked works, they tell an exciting story. We move from copies of ancient works through well-known Norwegian sculptors from the 18th and 19th centuries to contemporary artists' expressions and thoughts about material, technique, and the meaningfulness in sculpture.

"Marble has an inherent beauty, independent of the form, and this beauty elevates even a mediocre sculpture. Marble is also a material that can be shaped almost without limitations."

Håkon Anton Fagerås

The Shining Stone

The tactile, shining stone has always been used to celebrate and honor, to display power and wealth. In Marble Variations, we also want to show examples of the opposite through a diversity of works in the selection. The exhibition also includes two photo series, and we have asked all the artists to write down some thoughts about their work with the stone, reproduced in the exhibition catalog.
